Are you successful?

Are you successful? Do you have joy in your life?

If you can answer "yes" and "yes,", you are one of the few. Many people think that financial success or career success are the same thing as life success. They work hard to achieve that goal only to end up emotionally dissatisfied.

The goal is to enjoy the journey. The goal is about balance. We will spend a lot of time in the future going over how to be successful in business, relationships, and all other aspects of life. But for now, I really want you to think about your everyday life and the people you come in contact with - your spouse, children, clients, coworkers, and any and everyone else. Do they look fulfilled? Do they, to quote Tony Robbins, "live with passion?"

If you are truly going to be successful, you have to have a purpose in your life. In Get The Edge, Tony Robbins gives a familiar example. People say, "I want to make lots of money so that I can retire." Followed up by the statistic that men die, on average, 3 years after retirement. That doesn't sound like a great goal to me. That is a negative goal, it says, "I don't enjoy life on a daily basis and I don't enjoy what I'm doing." What a horrible way to live!

Have you ever been to a store and the sales clerk is at best unfriendly and at worst downright nasty? It is obvious that they don't want to be there. Why on earth do people do this? Why would you work day after day and year after year doing something you hate? And it isn't just limited to sales clerks, I have seen this from sales people, programmers, and nearly every other profession.

And it doesn't have to be at work. We all know people who do things and then complain about it later.

We live in a remarkable time in human history. We have more opportunities available to us than ever before. Take some time and think about what is most important to you. I'm not saying to shirk your duties and go live on the beach sipping pina coladas all day. We all have to do things that we don't want to. If work was fun, the rich wouldn't leave it for the poor to do!

I'm saying, examine your life and start thinking about what you want out of it in all areas - financial, spiritual, emotional, etc.

I think the next blog will be about the power of visualization.

Until next time... The price of victory is high but so are the rewards.

Introducing my blog

Hello and welcome to my blog. The goal of this blog is simple - to help people become successful. I do not claim to be a guru in this area, but I have achieved a level of success in my life and thought that this would be a good way to share some of the nuggets of wisdom that have helped me in my life.

Who am I? Well I have been in IT my whole life and most recently was a senior executive for one of the largest insurance companies in the world. I got tired of chasing money and now I am semi-retired (at 45) and enjoying life. Through many years of hard work, I have put myself in a position to be able to do what I want when I want, and work as much or as little as I want but am not by material standards wealthy.

I don't mention this to boast, most people who meet me think that I'm crazy for giving up the executive lifestyle. I mention this tiny fragment about my background to illustrate that we all have a different definition of success. Until you decide what true success is to you, you can never achieve it. As Lewis Carroll said, "If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there."

So, the first thing we are going to discuss will be deciding where we want to go so that we can get there. But once you decide what you want, what you really truly want, it will take effort to get there. That's why the title of my blog is "The Price of Victory." This comes from a quote by the legendary coach, Paul Bryant, "If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride - and never quit, you'll be a winner. The price of victory is high but so are the rewards."

I will try to post 3 to 4 times each week. I do not claim ownership of any particular principles, I am merely relating things that I have read (or will read) or heard that has impacted me in some way and try to give practical examples of how you can make this knowledge work for you. I will try to always give credit to whoever I got the "nugget" from as it is only fair to credit the proper person. When you have read as much as I have, you see that some ideas have been stated by different people many times over literally thousands of years.

Until next time... The price of victory is high but so are the rewards.
